There is a huge amount of choice when it comes to breakfast, snack or muesli bars and some are healthy and others are really just like a large sweet biscuit. So what should you look for when choosing a good muesli bar?
The simplest way to check if a muesli bar is good for you is to look at the dietary fibre per hundred grams on the nutrition information panel.
“The more dietary fibre the healthier the muesli bar and it will generally mean it is lower in sugar too.”
Some bars have 2% fibre or less, and are often high in sugar – more like a sweet biscuit – one of those refined carbohydrates we should not be eating a lot of. The higher fibre products, those with 7 grams of fibre per 100grams or more are a healthy choice.
Beware: a rice based bar may be whole grain however they are low in dietary fibre and high in sugar.
Looking at the sugar levels will be less helpful as often a muesli bar will have dried fruit in it which will increase the sugar level you read on the label but will not mean it’s unhealthy.
